Common Misconceptions About Botox

As we grow older, it’s only natural to look towards aesthetic medicine to reduce the effects of aging. There is nothing wrong with this — humans have been inventing ways to make themselves younger ever since the most ancient civilizations. We live in a day now where we’re lucky to have an incredible variety of anti-aging treatments, one of the chief among them being Botox — a treatment that specifically targets dynamic wrinkles.

Unfortunately, botox has gotten somewhat of a bad rap lately — many people have bought into common myths and misconceptions about the treatment that has caused them to avoid it. In reality, many of these are falsehoods, and as leading botox experts in the Prince Frederick and La Plata area, we feel like it’s necessary to dispel some of these misconceptions and provide the facts.

If you’re in La Plata and looking for medical spas nearby, Rejuvenation Medi Spa would be happy to serve you, but anyone would benefit from taking the following facts to heart:

Misconception: Botox Will Freeze or Stiffen My Face

This is probably the myth that has contributed the most to people having a negative perception about botox. How many times have you seen a celebrity appear on TV with a stiff face that’s clearly gone through multiple plastic surgeries, and then heard someone remark that they overdid the botox?

Well, that statement isn’t necessarily wrong, but it is misleading. There is such a thing as too much botox, or botox that’s administered poorly, and it can, in fact, affect your face and expressions.

However, we have to emphasize that this is the result of someone making a mistake; it’s akin to seeing someone with a poorly drawn tattoo. Would it be fair to say that all tattoo artists are inadequate because you saw one bad example? In reality, most tattoo artists are qualified, and there is a massive spectrum of quality, from the skill of the artist to the equipment they’re using.
It’s the same with botox — if you get the right amount, and have it administered by a qualified injector who knows their craft, we can promise that you won’t ever have to worry about “botox face.”

Misconception: Botox is Addicting

While we’re talking about botox-addled celebrities with unnatural looking faces, this often prompts another talking point — that said celebrities reached that point because botox is addicting and it keeps you coming back.

Once again, this is sort of true, but not in the way you think.

Let’s get one thing out of the way — there is nothing that is chemically addictive in botox. It does not, in any way, cause any kind of natural addiction. There are, however, people who develop a psychological addiction to botox because they enjoy feeling younger.

Botox works, and when it does, you’ll experience the magic of your age lines fading away. It’s a good feeling that some people take into excess, which can ultimately end up having adverse effects.

Misconception: Botox is Toxic

Botox is derived from botulinum toxin, which is, in fact, poisonous to your body. This toxin thrives in food that has gone bad, and is commonly associated with food poisoning.

However, to say that this means botox is toxic would be disingenuous. A counter-example is Adderall. Adderall, a medication that’s used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder, is an amphetamine. Crystal meth, an illegal drug, is also an amphetamine. The difference? One is a highly controlled drug that’s specifically administered by professionals to target a condition in the human body, the other is an uncontrolled substance that’s far and beyond what any human should be taking. There are countless more examples in the medical world that follow the same logic.

The same logic can be applied to botox — its parent source is toxic, but when administered by professionals to targeted areas in controlled doses, it poses no threat to the human body. Relax, we can promise you won’t have to take any emergency vomit trips to the toilet after your botox appointment.

Misconception: All Botox Treatments Are Equal

Botox, like many other procedures, can vary in quality and efficacy depending on the person who administered the treatment, and the tools they used to do it.

Our advice to anyone who is contemplating Botox is to do their research and personally discuss the treatment with the party that will be carrying out the procedure. You’ll want to make sure that they’re experienced, knowledgeable, and competent.

At Rejuvenation Medi-Spa, we meet all of these requirements.
