Botox: Your Solution for Excessive Underarm Perspiration

The medical name for excessive sweating is hyperhidrosis, and if you have it, you’re well-aware of how it can impact your life. Hyperhidrosis can cause you to sweat through your clothing and even drip sweat. It’s uncomfortable, embarrassing, and can make your life more difficult than it needs to be.

A neurotoxin to the rescue for hyperhidrosis

When you think of Botox, you probably think of injections to smooth lines and wrinkles. Indeed, the original use of botulinum toxin A, better known as Botox, was for cosmetic uses. However, it has since become a treatment for several medical conditions, including excessive underarm sweating.

Botulinum toxin A is a neurotoxin, meaning it affects the nerves. It’s related to the same microbes that cause food poisoning, but is quite safe when administered by professionals such as our staff here at Rejuvenation Medi-Spa.

Botox works to curb excessive sweating by blocking the nerves that receive signals to activate your sweat glands. Since it’s injected precisely where you need it, you don’t have to worry about not being able to sweat enough. Only a small percentage of your total sweat glands are located in your underarms.

Scientific evidence that Botox works for excess sweating

The fact that Botox has FDA approval to treat excessive underarm sweating means that it has undergone rigorous testing. One study published in 2014 concluded that “Botulinum toxin has been proved to be safe and effective for the treatment of axillary [underarm] hyperhidrosis.”

In fact, there have been more than 20 studies that have shown Botox is an effective treatment for excessive underarm sweating. As many as 98% of the patients who receive Botox to treat underarm hyperhidrosis are willing to recommend it to someone else with the condition.

Botox reduces underarm sweating by 82-87%. It usually takes 2-4 days for you to notice a difference and within two weeks you’ll be able to enjoy the full effects.

The results vary from person to person, but tend to last from 4-12 months, and even as long as 14 months. You won’t build up a tolerance or become immune to the treatments, either.

According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, “Botox is safe and effective for hyperhidrosis and consistently results in meaningful, long-lasting improvements in an excessive sweating patient’s symptoms, daily functioning, and quality of life.” They go on to add that successful treatment has been shown to improve on-the-job productivity as well.

Before, during, and after your Botox treatment

Before your Botox treatment, you should avoid shaving for 3-4 days. Otherwise, you don’t need any special preparation.

The treatment itself is fast, and should only take about 10-15 minutes to treat both underarms. We use an anesthetic, so you’ll be comfortable. You’ll need multiple injections with the exact number being determined by your specific anatomy.

You won’t have any big restrictions after your treatment, other than not doing any intense exercise and not using a sauna. You can continue on with your day as normal.

You’ll need to come in for a follow-up visit 1-2 weeks following your treatment. This is to allow our staff to make sure you don’t need any “touch-up” injections.
