Acne skin care treatments using Levulan Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the most recent acne therapy. Photodynamic acne therapy involves the use of Levulan (5-Aminolevulinic acid), a photosensitizing agent, which is then activated with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) resulting in significant improvement in moderate to severe cystic acne. Combining the IPL with Levulan involves three mechanisms of action against acne. Initially, Levulan deactivates the bacteria that triggers acne, then exfoliates the skin to unclog the pores and lastly, is the most exciting mechanism, where the Levulan treatment shuts down the sebaceous glands in the skin. This is especially important because sebaceous glands are the root cause in the formation of acne so it has a long lasting effect on severe acne.
